Struggling to get up early?

To get to work on time, I have to get up at 6am latest. This can be a bit of a bummer as I like to wake up naturally.

Recently I’ve had a lot of time off work. Through illness and holiday, I’ve only been in work 7 days over the past 3 weeks. Last week I had the entire week off to go on holiday.

So finding the motivation to get up and go to work after a week of lying in and enjoying myself was challenging. I’m sure I’m not the only one who struggles to get up to go to work.

So here are my top tips for getting up early:

1. Choose some upbeat music for your alarm.

I use Happy by Pharrell. It wakes me up straight away and gives me a little spurt of energy needed to get out of bed.

2. Put your alarm clock (or phone) a few metres away from your bed.

This way you have to leave the warmth and comfort of bed to turn your alarm off. Once you’re out of bed that’s half the battle done.

3. Go to bed earlier.

This one may seem obvious but it’s really effective. I know staying up to watch the next episode of the show you’re binging is tempting but you’ll pay for it tomorrow.

4. Turn off all screens!

After you’ve gotten to bed, it may be tempting to check your phone or put the t.v. on in the background. This is a mistake. Turn your t.v. off and out your phone far away from your bed. You’ll have better quality sleep and feel more rested the next day.

5. Don’t drink on weeknights.

Getting is early after a few drinks is the worst! Alcohol dehydrates us and reduces the quality of sleep that we get. This will lead to you feeling awful the next morning. You’ll feel groggy and thirsty and you really won’t want to get up and go to work. So save it for weekends when you can lie in.

I hope these tips are useful to you. I try to use all of them and when I’m successful it’s a lot easier to get up in the morning. And also the prospect of going to work seems less daunting.
